Once you have read the course details and technical requirements and decided to pursue your application with the department, you need to fill in a technical information form and a college application form, which are both required.

As the course will begin in October you should be thinking of registering as soon as possible to ensure that you get a place on the course. Registration including payment must be completed by December 1st.

As the Postgraduate Certificate is taught almost entirely over the Internet we will need information from you about your technical experience and equipment. For this purpose you should fill in the electronic technical information form, which will be handled by the school course administrator. You should receive an immediate electronic acknowledgement that your form has been received. If you are having problems using this form, please e-mail the school course administrator.

We anticipate that most students will be using PCs, Macs or UNIX computers although the course is accessible to students using other computers. However, the Department cannot guarantee an equal level of technical support for students not using UNIX, PCs or Macs.

This list of requirements should act as a guide only as there are bound to be variations and combinations which are not mentioned above. If after reading the above you are still unsure about the level of your technical know-how or the equipment you will need to e-mail the technical consultant Dr David Houldershaw (mention px course).

Once you have read the course details and completed the technical information form, the next step is to complete the online application form on the Protein Crystallography College website, (under "Apply now") which will be handled by Registry in the first instance. You should receive an immediate electronic acknowledgement that your form has been received. If you are having problems using this form, please e-mail the course administrator.

The enrolment procedure usually takes about two weeks. Applications which are not complete will be subject to delays so please fill in the form as accurately as possible.

Course Fees and Method of Payment

Current rates can be found on the Protein Crystallography College Website under the heading "Fees and Funding". These vary depending on whether you will be classified as a home/EU or overseas student.

Payment should be made by credit card, by cheque, or other form of credit transfer. For students outside of the UK cheques should be drawn on a British bank and should be made payable to Birkbeck College.

Important

Note the rules on who qualifies as a home/EU student are complex. If you are a UK or EU citzen but have lived outside the EU recently or are an overseas citizen but resident in the UK then you should contact Birkbeck registry by emailing admissions@bbk.ac.uk to check your status.

Academic requirements

The minimum academic qualification required to register for the course is normally the equivalent to an UK BSc (Bachelor's) in a subject allied to one of the following: Computer Science, Biology, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.

If you are a PhD student registered at another university you are eligible if your supervisor, and University, agree to you undertaking this course. When you apply you will need to include a letter from your supervisor/university stating that there is no objection to you undertaking the PX course. Please e-mail this to the school course administrator (j.saunders@bbk.ac.uk).

If you are an undergraduate student you are normally not eligible to undertake this course (for exceptions e-mail the course organiser Dr Tracey Barrett (px@mail.cryst.bbk.ac.uk).
